Selected Studies, 2006-2026
Studies are typically smaller in scale than Crowle’s larger paintings and installations, and are most often executed in oil, with occasional drawings.
Subjects include closely cropped human features and expressions, pedestrian scenes, and fragments of landscape. The compositions isolate small moments or partial views, often presenting only enough information for the viewer to reconstruct the surrounding space through their own imagination.
Many of the works are developed within a monochromatic or limited palette. They function as formal explorations of tone, color, and composition while maintaining a realistic approach to observation.
Although modest in scale, these studies frequently relate to larger bodies of work within the practice. They provide a place where ideas about subject, palette, and structure can be tested and refined, sometimes informing projects developed at a larger scale.
